St Alexius Psycho-Socio Centrum, Brussels
Dwelling is theme that arose from a two month residency at the St. Alexius psycho-social centrum in Brussels, a centre for people with psychiatric vulnerabilities. To dwell is to ponder, it is also a home or place of rest. Together with my collaborator, Sophie de Serière, we developed a small series works — ceramics, poems, walks, photographs — which highlighted the daily routines, residues, and encounters we had with the residents. We wanted to understand how knowledge systems such as medicine and physiology codify experiences of a 'self' in relation to ideas of 'normality'. How do bodies diagnosed with particular conditions grant or take away agency? And how do we create novel forms of interaction that do not reinforce stigmas and stereotypes of those with mental health conditions?
